SAN DIEGO (Press Release) – Straight from the world-famous 92nd Street Y on Lexington Avenue, Wendy Sabin-Lasker took the helm the San Diego Center for Jewish Culture the first week of March 2010.

At the 92nd Y, Ms. Sabin-Lasker directed daytime programming including the ground-breaking Daytime@ The Steinhardt Building and 92YTribeca geared to baby boomers and new retirees. Under her leadership, the Daytime@ audience grew from a handful of classes and to over 200 programs. Among her many notable programs were the Noontime Lecture Series featuring renowned authors and other experts and a wide range of arts and humanities classes for which the 92nd Street Y is so well known.

From 1997 to 2002 Ms. Sabin-Lasker, headed the Performing and Literary Arts Program at the Sol Goldman Y (unaffiliated with the 92nd Street Y) on East 14th Street. As Founding Director of its Sperling Center for Cultural and Performing Arts, she helped establish and oversee an interactive children’s museum; an art gallery; and the theater program and facility. She also developed the Center’s performing arts classes for children and adults. Before joining the Sol Goldman Y, Ms. Sabin-Lasker directed education programs and group sales for an annual audience of 60,000 children and adults at the Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College.  At the Ulster Performing Arts Center from 1980 to 1983, she served as Director of Marketing and, before that, an associate in audience development.

Sabin-Lasker will be overseeing the programs of the San Diego Center for Jewish Culture, which include the San Diego Jewish Film Festival, the San Diego Jewish Book Fair, New Jewish Plays Project, the Celebrating Jewish Music Concert Series, a Holocaust Education Program, and the J*Company Youth Theatre.  The SDCJC facilities include a 500-seat theatre, a Judaica library, an art gallery, and a community Holocaust Memorial Garden.

“After a nationwide search we are very fortunate to have found a director who can take the San Diego Center for Jewish Culture to the next level,” said Michael Flaster, Chair of the SDCJC.  “Wendy’s vision, creativity and extensive management experience will help to allow our already flourishing center grow bigger and better.”

“The CJC leadership and staff have an extraordinary commitment to their audience.” said Sabin-Lasker.  I am especially excited to be here because I see so much potential for new programs and collaborations to grow our audience and donor base. I hope to see many new faces at the Center.”

Wendy Sabin-Lasker holds a B.S. in Theatre from SUNY New Paltz and an M.F.A. in Arts Management from Brooklyn College. She has also studied educational theater at New York University. Ms. Sabin-Lasker resides in San Marcos with her husband, Jerome Lasker, a research scientist.
