As the Psychologist Sees You

Happy Pills

Sir William Osler, distinguished man of medicine, once said, “The desire to take medicine is perhaps the greatest feature which distinguishes man from animals.”  Whether or not this is fact or fancy, it certainly seems as though man is not satisfied unless his problems are being solved by some magic formula, usually the formula that made up the components of a pill.

The case in point is that of the so-called “Happy Pills” or as we know them, tranquilizers. No other drugs ever gained the wide acceptance by the public as these products.  Years ago the famous ad gave us the slogan “Children cry for Castoria” but today grown folks do pretty much the same thing for the tranquilizing drugs.  We now seem to expect that these pills will dissolve all the things that are disturbing to us and make us happy, normal individuals.

It is true that mankind has benefitted greatly by the use of these drugs for we now find less need for the more drastic therapies of mental illness. The use of the various shock therapies have been reduced to a minimum and the back-room, isolated acutely disturbed patients are almost a thing of the past. This has changed the administration of mental hospitals greatly with less need for custodial care and more of therapeutic measures.

However, it is important to realize that these drugs solve nothing on their own.  Patients still have the same problems facing them and still need to work out the solutions to the problems.  It is only that they are calmer, more easily available to the use of individual and group psychotherapy which allows them to gain some insight into their problems and are able to work through these problems to a satisfactory adjustment.  As a result, hospitalization is far shorter than it ever was. On an outpatient basis, those not needing hospitalization are better able to carry through their daily tasks at home and at work.

The danger is that persons will depend upon these drugs for every minor upsetting situation, resorting to them rather than to the consideration of the problem itself.  Thus, they are attempting to treat the symptom rather than the cause. This does not cure anything.
