Southwestern Jewish Press, September 6, 1957, Page 1

Campaign leadership announced that an all-out effort would be made during the High Holy Days to raise an additional $17,000 for the United Jewish Fund and the United Jewish Appeal Emergency Rescue Drive starting Friday, September 13.

Dr. Walter Ornstein and Victor Schulman, General Campaign Co-Chairmen for the 1957 Drive, said that $283,000 had already been raised toward the original goal of $295,000 which the campaign Cabinet had increased to $300,000.

Although the amount raised for 1957 is the largest sum ever raised in San Diego, according to the Chairmen, the needs are much greater than ever before.  Because of this a re-solicitation will be made from all those who have not as yet contributed to the campaign and from all newcomers to the community in order to raise the $17,000 needed to reach the $300,000 goal.

The campaign will be held in all divisions and will be carried on through personal solicitation, telephone and mailing,” the Chairmen said.

Sisterhood’s ‘Women of Valour’ To Be Presented To Community Sept. 11
Southwestern Jewish Press, September 6, 1957, Page 1

The decoration committee of Sisterhood of Temple Beth Israel have borrowed once more from the biblical proverb that led to the origination of the “Women of Valour” luncheon-fashion show.  Mrs. M. Leichtag and Mrs. Arthur Bloom, co-chairmen of decor, have taken their color cue from the quote. “For her price is far above rubies,” for the important event that will be held in the Caribbean Ballroom of the El Cortez Hotel on Sept. 11th at 11:30 a.m.

The jewel-tone of ruby is being used for the table center pieces and in the unusual floral arrangements created by the use of feathery cocks-combs.  Depicting the regal women, who have been selected by a panel of judges as San Diego’s own “Women of Valour,” will be the ruby velvet bejeweled crown that is to become the focal center of the head table.  The mid-Victorian stage settings will also be graced with ruby-velvet drapes.  Jewel tones will dominate the costumes featured in the fashion show that is to be commentated by Mrs. Louise Feldman.

Carrying out the theme in ruby glitter are the numbered table cards that will aid Mrs. Nathan Schiller, chairman of seating arrangements.  Assisting the invitation committee were Mmes. Rawdon Libby and Mitchell Christenson.

The public is invited to this outstanding event. Reservations may be made by phoning Mrs. Norman Mann, reservations chairman; or members of her committee Mmes Glenn Karel, Sheldon Sackheim and Jack Stern.

Other Sisterhood members who are assisting in the final arrangements are Mrs. Valia Dennis, chairman of the day; Mmes Joseph A. Kwint, publicity; George Katz, hospitality; and Louis Karp, models.

Southwestern Jewish Press, September 6, 1957, Page 1

The fall and winter program of the Jewish Community Center will start after September 9, according to an announcement by Maury Novak, Program Chairman.

With the goal of improving the program services offered in the past few years, the Center Program Committee has been working with Mr. Murray Schneier, Program Director.  “Purpose of the program goals,” Novak said, “is to demonstrate good Jewish center programs for the new  Center building, which will be opened on April 1, 1958.”  However, practical reasons of budget and inadequate facilities will limit the growth of programming until the new building is ready.

Novak stated that group programs conducted with tweens, teens, and young adults will be expanded with camping and weekend programs. Along with this expansion an effort will be made to develop a Youth Council Program and to involve parents in the activities.

It is planned to develop club type services with new activity groups for children between ages 5 and 12.  The Nursery School, creative ballet, couples club, women’s rhythmic exercise class, Senior Adult Art Class, Women’s League, Senior Adults game periods and program, and single older adults will continue to function as part of the total program.
