Fund Membership Meets Dec. 15th; Ornstein and Schulman To Be Honored

Dr. Walter Ornstein and Victor Schulman will be honored by a testimonial as part of the 24th annual Meeting of the United Jewish Fund of San Diego, on Sunday, December 15, Irving Alexander, Committee chairman announced.
The dinner meeting which will be held in the Cotillion Room of the El Cortez Hotel is the Annual Report Meeting for the membership of the central Jewish community organization.
The year’s activities will be reported upon by the president of the Fund, Milton Y. Roberts and its Executive, Albert A. Hutler. Work of the Fund in the field of immigration, and the raising and distributing of money for Jewish causes will be reported on at the same time. The membership will be told of the possible merge of the Fund and the San Diego Federation of Jewish Agencies which has been underway during the latter part of 1957.
General Campaign co-chairman for the 1957 United Jewish Fund Drive and the United Jewish Appeal Emergency Rescue Fund, Ornstein and Schulman will be honored for their leadership in the most successful campaign in the history of the Jewish Community. Exceeding the 1948 effort, at which time Israel was engaged in a life and death struggle with the Arab States, the 1957 Campaign considered to be one of the most successful in the United States has raised $290,000 to date. The Testimonial will recognize the tremendous effort put forward by the chairmen, and their division leadership as well as by every worker in the drive.
The main order of business of the Meeting will be the election of twenty directors for a term of two years to fill the vacancies which will occur at the conclusion of the year.
The United Jewish Fund was organized in 1933 and incorporated in 1939. In the last ten years over $2,000,000 has been raised by the workers in the Fund for the needs of Jews throughout the world—overseas in many lands, in Israel, in the United States, and in San Diego. Over 65 percent of the money which has been raised during that period has gone to overseas activities of the United Jewish Appeal, including the Joint Distribution Committee, Ort, Jewish National Fund, and United Israel Appeal. Other overseas agencies which have benefited include: Hebrew University, Technion Institute, Histadrut, and many cultural activities in Israel.
On a national level agencies in the field of community relations, health and welfare, religious institutions, cultural and educational agencies, and many others have benefited in this Fund campaign for over fifty Jewish causes.

Jewish Labor Committee To Hear National Officer at Dinner Nov. 30

The Jewish Labor Committee of San Diego is planning a dinner and concert honoring Jacob Pat, National Executive Secretary of the Jewish Labor Committee. It will take place at the Beth Jacob Center, Saturday evening, November 30th.
Mr. Pat, brilliant speaker and author of many books, has just returned from two months in Israel, where he attended the Zionist Action Committee Conference. He will speak on the various problems facing our people at home and abroad.
Mr. and Mrs. Sandor Goldberger are coming from Los Angeles especially to take charge of and prepare a delicious home-cooked turkey dinner.

12th Annual Jewish Center Dinner Meeting Sun., Dec. 8

The new Jewish Community Center Building now under construction will be featured at the 12th Annual Dinner Meeting of San Diego’s Jewish Community Center on Sunday, Dec. 8, to be held at the San Diego Hotel at 7:00 p.m. The Annual Dinner will be preceded by cocktails from six to seven, according to Morris W. Douglas, committee chairman.
Primary business of the meeting will be the election of 24 Center Directors to fill terms one, two and three years bringing the Center Board to full strength.
A featured portion of the meeting will be a discussion of the building project which is scheduled for completion by April 1, 1958. Both a complete description of the building, and program which will be carried on with the facilities will be highlighted at the Annual Meeting.
A “Mock” directors meeting will portray the workings of the Jewish Community Center, the efforts to secure the new building as well as the purposes, policies and program of the new Community Building.
The nominating committee headed by Mack Esterson, assisted by Jerome Freedman, Morris Douglas, Mrs. Ruben Aved, Norman Gelman, Seymour Rabin and Al Solomon will recommend a slate of directors for the Center Board. Other nominees may be made by written petition of ten members of the Jewish Community Center.
The Jewish Community Center in its 12 years of existence is an outgrowth of a corporation formed in 1945 with William Starr as its first president. In 1947 a study was made by the Youth Committee of the United Jewish Fund as to the need for a Jewish Community Center in San Diego. At that time the study found that a Center Building such as is under construction today, was a necessity for a well-integrated community. The Committee also found that San Diego was one of the only major cities in the country without a Center Building.
In 1949 the present Center Board was formed. During the past twelve years a program which has not only been given local acclaim but has also been honored on a State-wide basis has been carried on. This includes Camp Jaycee, the first Day Camp in the entire community, and the Co-Operative Nursery School.
Programs now being carried on under Jewish auspices thru the Jewish Community Center include activities from Nursery School to senior citizens,. They vary from Arts and Crafts to discussion groups, from dances to camping. Emphasis in the Center program is on participation by the entire family.
The Jewish Community Center receives its operating funds from the Community Chest of San Diego, which is part of the United Fund Campaign. It is a member of the San Diego Federation of Jewish Agencies and the National Jewish Welfare Board.

Drew Pearson Guest Speaker At Israel Bond Dinner Dec. 1 at El Cortez Hotel

Drew Pearson, one of the nation’s leading reporters, will appear at the El Cortez Hotel on Sunday, December 1, at a 6:30 p.m. dinner in behalf of the State of Israel Development Bond Issue.
The famed newscaster recently returned from a trip to the Middle East where he interviewed on film the top political leaders of the Arab nations and Israel.
The dinner at which Mr. Pearson will speak is being sponsored by the Executive Committee of the San Diego State of Israel Bond Campaign, with Richard F. Lustig as chairman. Mr. Murray D. Goodrich, who has served as chairman for several years, now holds the position of Honorary Chairman of the Campaign. Both Mr. Goodrich and Mr. Lustig will share honors as toastmaster during the dinner.
The dinner will mark the final event of the current Israel Bond Campaign which is seeking $100,000 in investment capital for Israel from the San Diego community.

One of the most unusual dances of the season will take place Sunday, November 24th, in the Continental Room of the Hotel San Diego, it was announced by Morrie Kraus, general chairman of the affair which is being sponsored by the B’nai B’rith Henry Weinberger Lodge.

A former literature teacher in the New York secondary schools, MR. Stone came to Hollywood in 1919. At the present time, he is serving as the sole liaison between American Jewry and the Motion Picture Industry, and is associated with the Community Relations Committee of the Los Angeles Jewish Community Council.
His extensive background and rich experiences coupled with his charming personality make him a delightful and fascinating speaker, according to Coffee Chat Chairman, Mrs. Simon Reznikoff.
