Hebrew Home For The Aged Auxiliary”

The regular monthly meeting of the Hebrew Home for the Aged Auxiliary will be held on Wednesday, January 22nd, at the Home, 4075 54th St., at noon.  An interesting program is being planned and Mrs. Dave Horowitz, Luncheon Chairman, with a capable committee, will provide a delicious luncheon.

The Rummage Sale will be held at 620 12th Street, near Market, on January 20, 21 and 22nd.  The Chairman, Co-Chairman and Committee are busy with pick-ups, but have ample time to pick yours up.  If you cannot bring your rummage to the Home, call Mrs. Louis Feller, AT-2-7344, or Mrs. Sid Goldstein, AT-2-7345.

January 14th is the date chosen to take the guests of the Home for the monthly outing. Tentative plans are that Rose Neumann and June Sosna will be hostesses for a luncheon for the guests in Mrs. Sosna’s home.

Phil Gepner, Commander of the Department of California, Jewish War Veterans, will be the guest speaker at the monthly meeting of San Diego Post 185 on Tuesday, January 14, 8:15 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Building, Balboa Park.

Mr. Gepner, a Los Angeles attorney with a distinguished record in World War II, is a leader in many Southland Jewish activities.

The meeting will also feature the report of the Nominating Committee for the next term’s officers and a report on the Jewish Community Center Flagpole Committee.

Council Women To Discuss Presidency

Presidency 1958 will be discussed at the next meeting of the new International Relations Study Group of the National Council of Jewish Women, Wednesday, January 15,1 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Earl Richmond, 4563 Patria Dr.  Dr. Henry L. Janssen, Associate Professor of Political Science at State College, will present an analysis of the role of the chief executive during the coming year.

Mrs. Stanley Leonard, chairman, announces that limitations and expectations of the presidency both on a general level and with special reference to President Eisenhower will be studied.

New members will be guests at the next meeting of the Women’s League of the Jewish Community Center.  The League will hold a dessert tea and card party on Friday, January 21, 12:30 p.m. at the Lafayette Hotel. At that time, the drawing for the portable television set will take place. For reservations, call Mrs. M. Wax, AT 1-8960.  Nursery service will be available by calling the Center, AT-1-7744.

Hi-Inc will greet newcomers at a “coffee” to be held on Friday, January 10, 1 p.m., in the home of Pres. Mrs. Norman Gelman, 4558 Barbarossa Pl, JU-2-2741.

The Women’s Bowling League is drawing capacity crowds on Mondays at the bowling lanes in Mission Valley.  Women interested in substituting for regulars can contact Mrs. Jack Brisker, AT-4-3363.

Board meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month at the Hebrew Home for the Aged, 4075 54th St.  Interested persons are invited to attend.

Elected to the position of Aleph Godol (president), Bartly Doctor, Alep S’gan (vice-president) Gene Rothstein; Aleph Mazkir (secretary), Mary Freeman; Aleph Gizbor (treasurer) Sidney Winicki; Aleph Shotare Godol (sergeant-at-arms) Dave Yarus; Aleph Shoatre Kotone (assistant sergeant-at-arms) Mike Bennett; and Aleph Kohn Godol (chaplain) Melvin Brav.

Our New Year’s Eve Dance was a complete success.  Thanks  to Mr. Sam Bennett for the fine job of chaperoning.

The next meeting of San Diego AZA will be Sunday, January 12, at 1:00 in the Jewish Center, Central and University. AZA is a fraternity for Jewish boys from 14 to 17.  It has a five fold and full program: athletics, culture, community service, social activities, and religion.  Any boy interested in joining AZA is invited to attend the meeting.

“News–Straight or Biased” will be presented as the topic of the next Mr. and Mrs. Coffee Chat sponsored by the National Council of Jewish Women, Thursday,, January 23, 8 p.m. in the Garden Room of the Lafayette Hotel.

The obligation of the newspaper to society will be discussed. Whether or not the quality and quantity of material placed before the public fulfills the responsibility to present the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth will be questioned, criticized and defended, according to chairman Mrs. Simon Reznikoff.

Featured in the program will be four eminent San Diego journalists: Simon Casady, editor of El Cajon Valley News; Maxwell Kaufman, editor of the Southwestern Jewish Press; Richard F. Pourade, editor of the San Diego Union, and Edwin Self, editor of San Diego Magazine and Point.

Following the individual presentations, there will be a round-table discussion with each of the speakers participating.  Questions will be answered as raised by the audience.

Co-chairmen for the evening are Mrs. Howard Harris and Mrs. Arthur Levy.  Reservations may be made with Mrs. Lester Kraus, BR-7-3206.  The refreshment charge is 50c per person.  Mrs. Herbert Reder is vice president in charge.

There’ll be activities to appeal to every age and delicious home-style food for every appetite. Couples Club Plan ‘Mexican Holiday’

“Mexican Holiday” will be the theme for the next Couples Club event to be held Saturday, January 18, 8:15 p.m., at the Tifereth Israel Center.

The opening prize-winning social mixer will commence promptly at 8:15 p.m., followed by remarks of Presidents, MR. and Mrs. Robert Grossman. Serenades will be sung by Louis Sahfran during intermission.

Featured will be Miss Julia Nichols, professional traveler who will present an outstanding colored travelogue on fascinating sections of the Mexican interior.  There will be appropriate decorations and displays of the arts and crafts of the nation.  Mexican dress is optional.

After the awarding of the door prize, there will be homemade refreshments and Latin American dancing for everyone.

The donation is 50 cents per non-member, which can be applied to membership dues if paid the same evening.

Birdie Stodel Women To Hold Donor Brunch January 27th

S.D. Birdie Stodel Board members invite as their guests for brunch all members or friends of B’nai B’rith who turn in their paid-up donor book.  Brunch, 11:30 a.m., Monday, January 20, Beth Jacob Center.  The drawing will be that day, to be followed by a social afternoon. Bring your friends and equipment. All others welcome with usual donation. Goldie Schusterman, Helen Sparber and Marian Resnick are in charge of this special brunch.

Mrs. Harold Lehrer, Chairman of the Jewish community Center’s Pre-Teen Committee, announced that registration will be open for two new activites at the Center building, 4056 University, beginning the week of January 13th.

The Sophomore Drama Class, for children, ages 9 thru 11, will have its first meeting Tues. afternoon, January 14th, at the Hebrew Home for the Aged, at3:30 p.m.  Londa Zuckerman, a Speech and Drama Arts Major at State College, will instruct the class.  A registration fee of $3.00 for ten lessons will be charged.  Miss Zuckerman will bring with her a host of experiences both on the college level, as well as her previous work in the Children’s Theatre.

The popular Creative Dance and Ballet Group is opening its rosters for re-registration. The group has been meeting since mid-October under the direction of Mrs. Irene Timen, prima ballerina, on Wednesday afternoons from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. A fee of $13.00 for 10 lessons is being charged for members, and $17.50 for non members.

Parents who wish to register for the above, ot other PRe-Teen activities are asked to contact Murray Schneier at the Center, AT-1-7744.

Mrs. Reuben Aved, Chairman of the Teen Committee, announces that a Teen Athletic League is being established under Center auspices for all the youth. The Center will use the Crawford High School Gym every Sunday afternoon from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
