Campaign Reaches 43% of U.J.F. Goal

The 25th United Jewish Campaign opened this week with 43% of the goal reported pledged, according to Campaign Chairman Harry Wax.
Over $130,000 has been secured toward the $303,000 goal for 1958, the highest quota set in San Diego’s history.
Plans are now well under way for the launching of solicitation in all divisions immediately after the Passover Holidays.
Moving at full speed are the women’s Division and the PaceSetters, responsible for the largest percentage of the campaign goal.
Headed by Abraham Abramson and Larry Lawrence, the “Pace-Setters” are soliciting their 185 prospects totaling $169,000. Workers in this top division are: Sam Addleson, Robert Carlin, William Colt, Morris Douglas, Dr. Harold Elden, Carl M. Esenoff, Charles Fireside, Irving Friedman, Martin Gleich, Frank Goldberg, Murray D. Goodrich, Ben Harris, Julius Kahn, Maury Novak, Dr. Walter Ornstein, Sol Price, Seymour Rabin, Max Rabinowitz, Allan Raffee, Dr. Joshuya Rittoff, Milton Y. Roberts, Victor Schulman, Robert Shapiro, Abraham Sklar, Louis Steinman, Dr. Robert M. Stone, David Stotsky, Samuel Sussman, Ruben Umansky, and Harry Wax.
The Women’s Division have reached 66% of their goal of $52,000 under the leadership of Mrs. Harry Wax and her Vice-Chairmen, Mmes. Robert Spiegel and Alex Wise.
“Herbert Solomon joined campaign leadership,” Wax announced, “as the Chairman of the Young adult Division which will have responsibility for contributions from young executives.” Solomon, an attorney, is a member of the Community Services Organization of young leaders.
The North County Campaign, headed by Abe Eidex, assisted by Leon Reichel, Oceanside Chairman, and Ernest Green, Escondido leader, will also open.

Passover Services Set For Hebrew Home

Two Federation Agencies will open the Passover Holidays with Seders but in different settings.
Servicemen and women stationed in the San Diego area will celebrate the holiday with a first night Seder at the Naval Training Center on April 4, according to Morris W. Douglas.
Douglas, Chairman of the JWB Armed Services Committee, announced that Chaplain Barry Green of Pendelton and Chaplain Elihu Rickel of 11th Naval District will conduct the services.
The Seder is under the direction of Mrs. Tom Turner, assisted by Stanley Yukon.
At the other end of town residents of the Hebrew Home for the Aged and their families will have their first Seder in their spacious dining room.
Planned and sponsored by the Women’s Auxiliary of the Home the Seder is an annual tradition according to Maxwell Kaufman, Home President.

Highland Springs Popular With Single Adults

During recent months, Highland Springs resort has been having some fun-filled weekends for single adults.
It has become so popular and provided so much enjoyment and opportunities for making new acquaintances that they have been repeating these weekends every month.
Each weekend has provided an abundance of different guests adding that necessary spice of variety. Since they have had a full house on each occasion, it is suggested that reservations be made early.
Next scheduled weekend is set up for April 18 and 19 and you will be happy to learn that their beautiful heated and filtered swimming pool is in full operation.

‘No Time For Sergeants’ Plays Three Performances

An innovation in San Diego legitimate theater presentations will be introduced Tuesday evening, the second day of appearances by the New York cast of the stage comedy, “No Time for Sergeants.” The company will make three local appearances Monday and Tuesday under auspices of Mrs. Lucille Palmer.
The innovation will be a twilight matinee at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, arranged primarily for those whose work keeps them in offices, stores or plants until late afternoon. The schedule was set up so that they can see this comedy of life in the Air Force without having to travel home and back downtown.

First performance will be at 8:30 p.m. Monday with the final appearance scheduled for 9 p.m. Tuesday.
A San Diegan, Hurd Wiese, is a member of the company, portraying the role of “Lt. Baker.” The play, adapted by Ira Levin from the book by Mac Hyman, is a Maurice Evans-Emmett Rogers production.
Wiese became well-known locally for his appearances in Shakespearean Festivals at the Old Globe and in other Community Theater productions.
Charles Hohman and Rex Everhart have the lead roles in the play. The story line tells of the misadventures of an Air Force rookie whose bumbling activity hilariously disrupts the standard operating procedure of the Army and the Air Force.

Hadassah to Spotlight Minyan Captains For Youth Aliyah Meeting April 16

The next meeting of Hadassah to be held at 11:30 a.m. on April 16 at the Lafayette Hotel, will honor the Minyans. The program will highlight the Youth Aliyah project in a novel manner.
The members of the Minyans will decorate the tables, and the following captains will participate in a fashion show by modeling gowns, furnished by the Adorable Shope in North Park: Ann Godes, Edith Hosenpud, Betty Feller, Joyce Sapp, Tully Kitaen, Edna Gardner, Jeannette Wax, Gerry Lawerence, Libby Teacher, Lillian Nathan, Lillian Newman, Amelia Wallack, Lilo Berger, Katherine Fleischner, Rose Smith, Sidonia Stitzel and Lillian Miller. Also featured in the show will be a group of active young matrons, ho will model the old and new controversial chemise fashion designs. They will be Bea Epsten, Pauline Foster, Barbara Fox, Lee Goldberg, Barbara Hoffer and Elene Solomon.
The capable committee, headed by Ray Solomon, chairman: Veida Eisen, co-chairman and Sally Schissel, will be assisted by Gladys Block, Gerry Hess, Ray Feurzeig, Dorothy Snyder, Naomi Malley and Katherine Fleischner. Sandy Levenson will be the fashion commentator.
The business meeting will be brief, as all emphasis is to be on the social afternoon. Please note that the time has been changed to 11:30 to insure a relaxed and pleasant afternoon.

Pyramid Passover Pancakes

2 eggs
A pinch of salt
1 tablespoon sugar
½ cup milk
1/3 cup matzo meal
1 tablespoon melted butter
Beat eggs with salt till light. Stir in sugar, milk and matzo meal till free of lumps. Heat butter in a 5 or 6 inch frying pan and turn hot melted butter into the batter. Pour batter into pan, in a thin stream, starting at center and tipping pan to spread into thin layer. Bake over moderate heat only until the edges curl up slightly, indicating the pancake is lightly browned and the top firm. Turn out with a pancake turner or spatula on a flat plate that has been heated.
Or use a paper towel to absorb excess fat. Bake the next pancake in the same way. Spread the following cheese mixture over the top of the first pancake. Turn the second pancake over the filling. Spread more filling. Repeat till 5 or 6 pancakes are baked. Dust with a little sugar and cinnamon and cut into 3 or 4 wedges, pie fashion. Serve hot, with honey, stewed fruit or just plain.
Cheese filling
Combine the following to smooth consistency for spreading:
6 ozs creamed cottage cheese
2 tablespoon sugar
1.8 teaspoon cinnamon
A pinch of salt
Excellent with strawberry or other preserves.

Couples Club To See ‘Moses” Film

“The Life of Moses,” artistically portrayed in the first San Diego showing of seven series of colored slides, is scheduled as part of the next outstanding program of the Tifereth Israel Couples Club for Saturday, April 19, 8:15 p.m. at Tifereth Israel Center.
“The Life of Moses,” appropriately planned for the Passover holiday, will be narrated by Ralph Kress, head of the Tifereth Israel Visual Education Department.
During the intermission, Cantor Cysner will render one of his own compositions and other selected melodies. In addition to the opening get-acquainted contest and monthly door prize, there will be refreshments served. Donation for non-members will be fifty cents.

The Cottage of Israel will open up the lawn programs of the House of Pacific Relations on Sunday, April 20, at 2:30 p.m. in special honor of the 10th anniversary of Israel’s Independence, a program commemorating the auspicious occasion is being planned.
Mrs. Seymour Gates is program chairman and is being assisted by Mr. Vyts Bellajus, prominent folk dance instructor who is directing the Cottage of Israel dance group.
Mrs. Hy Parrell, financial secretary asks those members who have not yet sent in their dues for 1958 to please do so. The income covering the operation of the Cottage of Israel is derived mainly from membership dues. Send your dues which are $2.00 per year to Mrs. Parrell at 5611 Meade Ave. New members would be greatly welcomed.
