ENCINITAS, California – Laura Simon, 108, died in her sleep late Saturday evening, June 14, at the Aviara Healthcare Center where she was under hospice care, her son Mayo said. Arrangements were pending for burial on Tuesday in Chicago’s Waldheim Cemetery. Mayo, 86, who no longer drives, said a rabbi from his Chabad shul on 97th Street in Manhattan would fly to meet him Chicago, rent a car, drive out to the cemetery, perform the rites, and then return with him to Manhattan, where Mayo will sit shiva.
Earlier on Saturday, Mayo had been at his mother’s bedside as Laura lingered somewhere between life and death. …. (See earlier story)
