Guardians To Hold Giant Charity Ball

On Sunday, May 25, the Guardians will take over the entire Mission valley Club for their annual Charity Ball. Chairmen Sam Berger and Al Richman and their committee have arranged an evening which promises to be the season’s most outstanding affair.
At 6 p.m., hors d’ouevre will be served for the cocktail hour preceding the Gourmet Buffet Dinner to be served a 7 pm.
Highlight for the evening will be an All-Star Television Review with Roberta Lion, Sue Carson, King , King & King, Tony Martinez and orchestra with Billy Rose at the piano, and as an added attraction the original “Baby Rosemarie.”
The Guardians are asking all members to support this fund raising effort. All proceed from this affair will go to the San Diego Hebrew Home for the Aged.

Jewish War Vets To Honor War Dead Memorial Day

San Diego Post 185 and Ladies Auxiliary, Jewish War Veterans of U.S.A., will join with all major veteran organizations in the annual Memorial Day services on Friday, May 30, at 10 o’clock a.m. at the Fort Roesecrans National Cemetery (the tip of Point Loma). The solemn and colorful services in honor of our nation’s war dead is conducted at the replica of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Chaplain Elihu Rickel, Assistant Chaplain of the 11th Naval District and Past National Chaplain, Jewish War Veterans, will be one of the officiating chaplains. The Jewish community is invited to attend. The children will long remember this patriotic observance which will feature the reading of the Gettysburg Address by a veteran of the Spanish American War, the Navy Training Center Band, and the Marine Color and Rifle Guard.
Water services will also be held at sea aboard a naval vessel. Willie Mintz will represent the Post at this service in which wreaths are cast upon the ocean waters.
In the afternoon, at 1 p.m., the same day, Post 185 will conduct memorial services at the Home of Peace Cemetery in memory of their departed San Diego comrades.

Jewish Community Offices Move May 23 to Center Building

Announcements have been mailed to members of the United Jewish Fund of the moving of all Jewish Agencies to the Jewish Community Center building, 4079 54th Street, on May 23, 1958.
Agencies housed in the Jewish Community Building will be the United Jewish Federation, United Jewish Fund, Jewish Social Services agency, Jewish Welfare Board-Armed Services Committee, Émigré Committee, and Community Relations Council.

Center Dedication To Be Held June 8th – 3 p.m.

Participation from San Diego’s governmental, civic, military and religious leaders in the Dedication Ceremonies of the Jewish Community Center has been assured for Sunday, June 8, according to Morris W. Douglas and Bernard Arenson, Co-Chairmen.
The historic event will begin at 3 p.m. in order not to conflict with the joint picnic of the religious schools of the community.
Events formally opening the Center building will include presentation of a flagpole and colors by the local Jewish War Veterans; and the religious ceremony of Hanukas Habayas (Dedication of the House).
The Naval Training Center Band will furnish music throughout the day.
At the conclusion of the ceremonies the building will be formally opened and tours will be conducted. Demonstrations will be given by the nursery school and arts and crafts. There will also be a swimming exhibition directed by Stanley Kistler, Center Aquatics Director.
Invitations have been forwarded to all members of the community who are being urged to bring their friends.

Fund to Send $70, 000 to UJA: Directors Vote to Borrow $45,000 for UJA Loan

Directors of the United Jewish Fund of San Diego took action on the request of the United Jewish Appeal for immediate cash and for an additional loan.
Agreeing to furnish $70,000 in cash to meet the overseas demands of the United Jewish Appeal in Israel and elsewhere the Directors urged all who have not as yet contributed to do so immediately.
At the same time the Directors favored making an additional $45,000 loan for the United Jewish Appeal to enable Israel to meet short term loans now coming due.
The resolution accepted by the Directors of the United Jewish Fund stated as follows: “Today the United Jewish Appeal is again called upon to help in the solution of one of the most serious problems confronting the people of Israel. On the one hand, since 1956 Israel has had to receive new waves of refugees. On the other hand, Israel’s people have been unable to cope with this problem inasmuch as the unsettled conditions in the Middle East have forced Israel to devote a large share of its limited resources for the defense of its people and its territorial integrity.
Moreover, while the Jewish Agency has devoted itself to the absorption of the immigrants in Israel, the funds supplied, the Jewish Agency have not kept pace with the size and tempo of migration to Israel. The problem of the rapid absorption of the tens of thousands of newcomers in Israel who today lack housing and other means to integrate fully in the economic life of the country, can be solved only by the acceleration of the supply of funds to the Jewish Agency.
Accordingly we the representatives of the American Jewish communities and members of the National Campaign Cabinet of the United Jewish appel resolve as follows:
1. That, in order to provided needed immediate support for the humanitarian programs of the United Jewish Appeal in Israel, all communities in the United States be called upon to participate in a Renewal Loan project.
2. That each community be urged to borrow an amount which, inclusive of the balance on its outstanding loan, shall at least be equal and, where possible, exceed its previous maximum indebtedness in behalf of the United Jewish Appeal.”
Because of the financial crisis of the United Jewish Appeal Campaign leaders urged that there be no delay in securing gifts.

Campaign Must Not Drag, Chairmen Plead; 50% Of Contributors In As Speedup Urged

As the Women’s Division completed its four major luncheons workers in every phase of the 1958 United Jewish Fund Campaign were urged to finish their job.
Calling for a supreme effort to finish the job as rapidly as possible, Harry Wax, Campaign Chairman, and his Vice Chairmen, Martin Gleich and Rabbi Morton J. Cohn, set aside the next ten days for a concentrated attempt to complete the coverage of all prospects by workers in the Pace-Setters, Campaigner’s, Marcher’s and Professional Divisions.
Mrs. Harry Wax, Chairman of the Women’s Division, reported that three brunches had raised over $38,000 toward the unprecedented goal of $52,500 taken by the women as their share of the 1958 goal.
The first Junior Matrons brunch in the history of the Women’s Division was held last Thursday with Mrs. Hebert Solomon and Mrs. Frank Goldberg as Chairmen. Over 50 young women who had never participated in a Fund campaign before, gathered to hear the story of the United Jewish Fund Drive as told by Kurt Katch, famous European Hollywood actor now playing in “The Young Lions.”
At the same time the Yong Matrons saw a fashion show of swimming and sports wear by Worth’s.
Vice-Chairmen of the Women’s Division are Mrs. Elizabeth Wise and Mrs. Robert Spiegel.
The chairmen declared that they were encouraged by the giving to date which showed a 4 1/2 % increase over 1957, but that the drive was in danger of dragging.
$130,000 has been raised in the Regular Drive toward the goal of $203,000 for ordinary needs of the Fund, the Chairmen reported.
In the United Jewish Appeal Rescue Fund, to meet the needs of immigration to Israel, $70,000 of the $100,000 goal has been raised.
Total raised to date is $200,000 from 1,200 contributors or two-thirds of the goal.

Center Workers Attend Conference

Mr. Albert A. Hutler, Executive Director, and Mr. Irving Mortin, Assistant Director, are attending the Jewish Communal Service Conference in Chicago from May 16 through the 21. The Conference combines the National Association of Jewish Center Workers, the National Council for Jewish Education, the Association of Jewish Relations Workers and divisions in Community organization, Family and Children’s Service, Aged services, Health and Vocational Services.
Mr. Hutler and Mr. Mortin will join over one thousand colleagues in exchanging ideas and improving sills in working with people of all ages.

Mr. and Mrs. Niel Himmel left for Chicago, May 13, via the Super Chief. They will be houseguests of their son, Norton, and his family. Friends of Mr. Himmel are hoping that her brother, Dr. Aaron Fagelson, will send her home to San Diego in good health.

Lana Schaffer To Perform in Whittier

Miss Lana Schaffer, who is soloist ballet dancer with the Eula Hoff Junior Ballet Company, was asked to appear in Whittier, California, for the performance of the Nutcracker Suite by Tchaikovsky on May 17 and 18. The talented young dancer is the daughter of Mrs. LaVerne Werner of San Diego, and MR. Melvin Schaffer of Miami, Florida.
Miss Schaffer will appear on June 1st at the Horace Mann Auditorium and again on June 18 at the Dana High Auditorium. She has been featured many times as a soloist for the operettas and cantatas performed by the Junior Choir at Tifereth Israel, under the direction of Cantor Cysner.

On Friday evening, May 16, Bruce Leroy Dennis, son of Mrs. Vailia E. Dennis, will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah. Services will be held in the Temple Beth Israel at 8 p.m. A reception will follow the ceremony.
