India donates collection of Gandhi books to University of Haifa

HAIFA, Israel (Press Release)–Indian Ambassador to Israel Navtej Sarna presented President of the University of Haifa, Prof. Aaron Ben-Ze’ev, with a unique and significant gift: the entire writings of Mahatma Gandhi. The University of Haifa’s library will be the only library in all of Israel to hold the entire collection of these manuscripts written by the great Indian philosopher and leader.

“It is very easy to follow Gandhi’s teachings in times of peace; the challenge is to follow his teachings in times of conflict,” Prof. Ben-Ze’ev said upon receiving the volumes.

The complete collection of Gandhi’s manuscripts includes 100 volumes, some of which are rare and difficult to come by. The cost of each volume can reach thousands of dollars.

This donation from the Indian Embassy expresses its ongoing support of the Modern Indian Studies program at the University’s Department of Asian Studies, which is the only program of its kind in Israel. The presentation was made in the course of the Ninth Annual Israeli Asian Studies Conference taking place this week at the University of Haifa.

“Anyone anyone looking to enrich their lives with the writings of a great man, and anyone searching for a philosophy of truth, love and non-violence, is invited to the University of Haifa Library to read through the writings of Mahatma Gandhi,” Prof. Ben-Ze’ev said.
