Dear Readers,
As a service to bereaved families—as well as to Jewish historians and genealogists – San Diego Jewish World embarks today (Jan. 30, 2015) on a program to print the eulogies delivered by our local rabbinate for recently deceased members of the San Diego County Jewish community.
In doing so, we would like to acknowledge a generous contribution made by Marc and Margaret Cohen in memory of Mollie Cohen and another from Inland Industries LLC in memory of Mrs. Gabriel (Marie) Berg.
What prompted this service was our recent discovery of how expensive it is for families to place obituary notices in the local newspapers. The cost of reprinting a eulogy can run more than a thousand dollars, and, in our opinion, families dealing with the death of a loved one have too many funeral expenses pressing upon them to be forced to deal with such extra expense.
San Diego Jewish World has the space and the interest to publish for free the stories of our community members’ lives and deaths. We encourage their family members and friends to post their comments about their loved ones in the space provided below each eulogy. In such a way, we can both comfort the families and help assure that the memories of their loved ones will be a blessing.
I would like to thank the San Diego Rabbinical Association for its interest in this project, and particularly Rabbis Nadav Caine of Ner Tamid Synagogue and Leonard Rosenthal of Tifereth Israel Synagogue for speaking in its behalf to their fellow rabbis. If you care to do so, please send us a photo of your deceased family member to go with the eulogy.
