Humoring the headlines: April 3, 2015

SAN DIEGO─ In an interview he gave during his trip to Israel, John Boehner admitted, “I wouldn’t have believed that I would be involved in as much foreign policy as I am today.  And it certainly isn’t by choice. It’s just that the world is on fire.”  Apparently Boehner hadn’t spoken to Ted Cruz recently and learned that this kind of alarmism only scares three year-olds.

Corporations like Apple and Walmart lobbied successfully this week to get Arkansas and Indiana to redraft legislation that would have sanctioned discrimination against the LGBT community for religious reasons.  Sexual orientation has nothing to do with whether mergers, be they economic or romantic, are profitable.

Ethicists have criticized Utah’s decision to restore the firing squad as a method of execution if drugs used for lethal injections are not available.  Utah officials have retorted, “Either way the condemned will die from shots.”

Benjamin Netanyahu denounced the framework for the nuclear deal which the United States, China, France, Germany, Russia, and the United Kingdom have just concluded with Iran.  A perceptive reporter noticed that the text of Netanyahu’s speech issued in conjunction with his statement was dated before the terms of the agreement were announced.

In the wake of a spate of recent incidents at fraternities on American campuses, university administrations are debating whether fraternities foster racism or sexism or whether racist and sexist men are more likely to join fraternities to get in touch with their inner bigotry and male chauvinism.
