Were other genocides comparable to the Holocaust?
LA JOLLA, California (Press Release) — Was the Holocaust unique, or was it a catastrophe comparable to other genocides? This question has engaged historians for decades and is the topic of a lecture by Norman Naimark, who specializes in modern Eastern European history and the history of ethnic cleansing and genocide.
Naimark’s publications include The Russians in Germany: The History of the Soviet Zone of Occupation; Fires of Hatred: Ethnic Cleansing in 20th Century Europe; and Stalin’s Genocides. At present he is working on a world history of genocide. Naimark has been awarded the Officers Cross of the Order of Merit by Germany, and he is the recipient of the Alex Springer Berlin Prize from the American Academy in Berlin. Most recently, he was elected as a foreign corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences
Naimark will speak at 5 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 4, in the BLB Events Room at UCSD. It is recommended that guests arrive by 4:45 p.m. to secure a seat.
The lecture is co-sponsored by UCSD’s History Department and the Holocaust Living History Workshop, which is an outreach and education program of the UCSD Library and Jewish Studies Program, and the History Department.
