House resolution urging protection of Jewish communities lauded

NEW YORK (Press Release)–“The Conference of Presidents applauds the House of Representatives for unanimously passing a bipartisan resolution which urges the United States and European governments to take steps to keep Jewish communities around the world safe.” So said Stephen Greenberg, Chairman, and Malcolm Hoenlein, Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations on Wednesday, Nov. 4.

As anti-Semitic crimes including increased violence in Europe escalates, there is a great need for formal relationships between governments, law enforcement security agencies, Jewish and other communities to prepare for and prevent dangerous anti-Semitic attacks.  “The number of violent anti-Semitic attacks has increased from 100 to 400 percent in some European countries since 2013,” said Rep. Chris Smith, R-New Jersey, who co-chairs the Bipartisan Taskforce for Combating Anti-Semitism and introduced the House Resolution. “The murders in Paris, Copenhagen, and elsewhere reminded us that there are those who are motivated by anti-Semitism and have the will to kill.”

The Jewish leaders said we thank all of those who initiated the resolution including the original co-sponsors: Rep. Ted Deutch (D-FL), Rep. Nita Lowey (D-NY), Rep. Elliott Engel (D-NY), Rep. Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Rep. Kay Granger (R-TX), Rep. Steve Israel (D-NY) and Rep. Peter Roskam (R-IL).

The conference welcomes further opportunities to bolster relationships aimed and supporting the safety of Jewish communities and individuals worldwide.

The Conference of Presidents has long been committed to bolster the security for Jewish communities at home and abroad. We have sought to enlist federal and local government agencies, civil security including educational, religious, media, cultural and other sources. Giving the alarming increase in all kinds of anti- Jewish attacks against individuals, facilitates and institutions, greater cooperation and accountability are essential.

ADL deplores physical attacks on Jews in New York City

NEW YORK (Press Release) — The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) expressed shock and horror at two apparently unrelated incidents of violence in Crown Heights, Brooklyn — the stabbing of Jewish man last night and the assault of another man early this morning on his way to synagogue.

On November 3rd around 9 p.m., a Jewish man was approached from behind on Eastern Parkway when he was slashed in the shoulder by an assailant who quickly fled the scene following the assault. There have been no arrests at this time.

ADL announced on Wednesday, Nov. 4, it  is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual responsible for the Eastern Parkway slashing.

Earlier on Wednesday, in a second and apparently unrelated incident, at approximately 6 a.m., a Jewish man was walking along Lefferts Avenue when an assailant allegedly approached him, knocked his phone out of his hand, and punched him in the face.  According to reports, while being placed under arrest by the NYPD, the suspect allegedly stated, “I’m tired and fed up of the Jews.”

“We are shocked and horrified by these unprovoked violent attacks against Jews,” said Evan R. Bernstein, ADL New York Regional Director. “Anti-Semitism simply has no place in New York City. We commend the NYPD and Brooklyn Borough President Adams for their quick response to these crimes. We are confident that the NYPD is devoting resources to their investigation and are increasing patrols in the area in the wake of these attacks.”
