Now that vacation is almost at an end
And school is just around the bend,
“twas a lovely summer,” everyone said,
So we sight and look ahead.
Eileen Rivers got a superb send-off for going to U.C.L.A. at a surprise party given by Lucy Recht. All her friends wished her the very best of luck.
The San Diego A.Z.A. welcomed the San Fernando Valley A.Z.A. and challenged them to a thrilling and exciting baseball game. The B.B.G’s entertained the boys at the home of Ethel Gardner.
Bernie Sosna’s 21st birthday was celebrated at a terrific party which included many of his friends. Best wishes.
Jane Cohn entertained her out-of-town guests with a lovely party given in their honor.

Pioneer Women, Negba Club, have formulated plans for the coming year of activities and announced a Dinner to be given next month in celebration of the Succoth Festival. Florence Conway, Cultural Chairman, will be in charge of the program.
Regular meetings will start at 12 Noon at Beth Jacob Center with Goldie Kitaen, Helene Bohrer and Tillie Adams as the new Luncheon Committee. A cultural afternoon and Oneg Shabbat will be held monthly to which all members are invited, time and place announced at our regular meetings.

Israeli Fashion Show Set by Hadassah

Hadassah will sponsor an Israeli Fashion Show on Sept. 24, at 1:30 p.m. at the State Theatre on El Cajon Blvd. This is the same spectacular show, direct from the Hadassah Convention in New York at the Waldorf-Astoria where an audience of 3500 delegates were overwhelmed by the creations from the young state.
According to Mrs. Victor Schulman, chairman, this city-wide will mark one of the highlights of Hadassah’s many successful achievements. Tickets at $1.50 are now available and will be sent on receipt of a check only. Call Mrs. Ray Bass, JU-2-4278, or Mrs. Al Slayen, HO-9-4434.

B.B. Girls To Hold Mother-Daughter Tea

The B’nai B’rith Girls will sponsor a Mother and Daughter Membership Tea on Sunday, September 19, at 2 p.m.

Temple Sisterhood to “Breakfast” September 22nd

Temple Beth Israel Sisterhood will set the pace for a lively club year with its annual “Breakfast with Sisterhood” to be held on Wednesday morning, September 22, 11 a.m. at the Manor Hotel. Under the able direction of Vice President Dora Eber, “Breakfast with Sisterhood” will include an audience participation program, featuring hilarious Harry Mitchell, as Master of Ceremonies.
Proceeds from this, as well as other Sisterhood projects during the year, will be used for improving the kitchen facilities at Temple Beth Israel Center, for providing holiday symbols and parties for the children of the Temple Beth Israel Religious School, and for meeting other Temple needs which may arise.

National Council of Jewish Women inaugurates its 34th season in San Diego on Wednesday, Sept 8 with a noon luncheon at Beth Jacob Synagogue, it was announced by Mrs. Milton Roberts, President. New members will be honored with complimentary luncheon at this meeting.
“Intimate Insight into Psycho Drama” with audience participation is the theme chosen by the speaker, Mrs. Leon Gardner, Red Cross Social Worker at the U.S. Naval Hospital.
The Glee Club under the direction of MRs. Edward Merkin will present musical selectios.

The Jewish Social Service Agency recently mailed copies of its brochure to members of the San Diego Jewish Community. The pamphlet was issued so that all may be informed of the services that are available through that organization. Harry Mallen, President of the Board of Directors, states that anyone who did not receive a copy can obtain one by calling the agency at BE-2-5172 and a copy will be mailed.
The Jewish Social Service Agency is supported by the Community Chest of San Diego and the Federation of Jewish Agencies.

Del Mar Turf Club in Final Sessions

Del Mar Turf Club moves along toward the final furlong pole of its 1954 thoroughbred race meeting this week-end, with a double barreled attraction on tap for the long Labor Day Holiday.
On Saturday, the West’s most precocious 2-year-old fillies come to grips I the fourth of the Debutante, one of the highlights of the racing season here. Out of the original nomination list of 166 fillies made a year ago there have emerged about a dozen deemed worthy of doing battle for the purse grossing nearly $33,000.
Following the Labor Day holiday, Del Mar will finish out its season the following Saturday, Sept. 11, featuring the running of the Del Mar Futurity, counterpart of the Debutante, with both colts and fillies eligible to try conclusions.

Square Dance Frolic sponsored by the P.T.A. will take place on Saturday, September 11 at the Beth Jacob Center. The doors will be open at 8 p.m. Mrs. Al Wittenberg, chairman, promises this to be an evening you won’t forget.
There will be delicious refreshments including hot dogs, drinks, donuts and coffee. Also promised is a wonderful door prize. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Miller will be callers. Holiday Dance Set by Yo-Ma-Cos Oct. 7

The Yo-Ma-Cos have plans for starting the fall season off with a bang. Two affairs are in the officing next month.
The annual Yom Kippur Dance will be held in the Don Room of El Cortez Hotel, Thursday, Oct. 7. There will be dancing from 9 to 1:00 a.m. to the tune of Peter Newburg’s orchestra, in addition to planned entertainment: come one, come all, for an evening of fun.
Plans are also in progress for a gala Halloween Party at Michael’s in Lemon Grove, with prizes for the best costumes. This will be held October 30 at 9:00 p.m.
The Bowling League will start again on Sept. 14 at 9:00 p.m. at Cedar Lanes.

New Officers Take Helm at Home

At the annual meeting of the Hebrew Home for the Aged held last Sunday the following officers and board members were elected: Pres., Victor Schulman; 1st V.P., Max Maisel; 2nd V.P., Maxwell Kaufman; Fin. Sec., Zelma Goldstein; Rec. Sec., Sarah Bystrom; Corr. Sec., Frieda Nestor; Treas., Carl Esenoff; Baord Members: Sol Price, Louis Karp, Arthur Glickman, David Sapp, Si Rich, Sol Bloom, Dr. Oscar Kaplan, and Dr. Earl Brody.
The meeting, held in honor of the memory of the passing of George Neumann, recorded a resolution memorializing the work of Mr. Neumann on behalf of the Home. A major room of the new structure will be dedicated in his memory.

School Opens Sept. 13

All new elementary school pupils, which includes all kindergarteners and all others who have moved into a new school district since last June, will register at the elementary school in their neighborhood on Friday afternoon.
Kindergarteners, in order to enroll this fall, must be 5 years of age by December 2, 1954. First graders must be 6 years of age by December 2, 1954. These minimum ages are established by state law.
Mrs. McIntosh said that birth certificates are required of kindergarteners and all first graders who have not previously attended the school in their neighborhood.
Pupils transferring from other schools in grades above kindergarten and first should bring either a report card or a statement of promotion. New residents who are not certain of the school district in which they reside may call the Research Office at the City Schools Education Center for information. Call CY-8-4681, Ext. 304.
Junior and senior high schools will register new students on Wednesday and Friday, September 8 and 10.
The school term begins Monday, September 13.
