SAN DIEGO (SDJW) — The Yiddish Arts and Academics Association of North America (YAAANA) will debut in San Diego with a free Shabbat dinner and concert and klezmer concert by Yale Strom beginning at 7 p.m., Friday, at the Costa Verde Village Clubhouse, 8720 Costa Verde Blvd., San Diego.
According to its founder, Jana Mazurkiewicz, YAANA was created “to promote Yiddish language and culture through academic and artistic events and through Yiddish food.”
“The events are multigenerational and aimed at preservation as well as advancement of Yiddishkeit,” continued Mazurkiewicz, a San Diego resident who is a doctoral candidate in the Slavic Languages and Literatures Department at the University of Michigan. “In food preparation,” she added, “special attention is paid to attendees with allergies and auto-immune diseases.”
One may RSVP for this event via this link, https://dinners.onetable.org/#/events/d0a91299-db88-4e39-8ff6-51c6574e4559, up to 4 p.m. on Friday. Cost of the dinner is underwritten by the One Table, Shabbat Together organization, which subsidizes members of the millennial generation to host approved Shabbat dinners.
Strom, a San Diego based musician and ethnomusicologist, is an artist in residence with San Diego State University’s Jewish Studies Program. He often performs with his wife, Elizabeth Schwartz, and his klezmer band, Hot P’Strom’i.
