‘King James’ Uses Sports Metaphor to Explore the Ups and Downs of a Friendship

The dialogue is fast-paced and funny, both because of  Rajiv Joseph’s writing and the animated faces of Foote and Echebiri.  San Diegans can especially appreciate how upset and betrayed Matt and Shawn feel when James moves to the Miami Heat and leaves his hometown.  I saw many in the audience nodding emphatically as Matt and Shawn lament the perceived betrayal, as memories of our own Chargers’ betrayal with their move to LA still feels fresh.  [Sandi Masori]

‘How I Learned To Drive’ at Backyard Renaissance Theater 

The show is heavy, though there are moments of comic relief and levity.  Throughout the performance driving instructions are used to break up the play and introduce different periods in Li’l Bit’s life.  For example, before a flashback sequence the “Greek chorus” opens the sequence by talking about throwing it into reverse. ‘Redwood’ Dramatizes Jewish Concept of ‘Lo tash’chit’

Prior to Jesse climbing the tree, Becca is trying to get her to leave and suddenly says “Lo tash’chit!” At this point my mind said “Wow, that sounded like Hebrew, but no it couldn’t have been.” But in fact it is.  Becca goes on to explain that it’s a Jewish concept of taking care of the trees as well as you take care of yourself. ‘Chicago’ Features Minimal Set and Costumes, Maximal Choreography

We follow the story of two murderesses; Roxie Hart (Katie Frieden) and Velma Kelly (Kaitlin Brown) and their sensational murder trials.  Being that it’s set in the roaring 20s which didn’t have modern day social media, the flashy and charismatic and lawyer Billy Flynn (Connor Sullivan) is able to manipulate the press and jury with wild and conflicting stories about his clients, or as he calls it razzle-dazzle, in his attempts to acquit his client. [Sandi Masori]

Brazucas! A Taste of Home Cooking at Brazil By the Bay

She suggested a dish from the Brazilian state of Bahia, Moqueca.  It’s a curry-style fish dish (I asked them to hold the shrimp) that is served with rice.  While there’s no actual curry in it — because the sauce is made with coconut milk and has bell peppers — the flavor reminded me of Thai food.  It was a little sweet, but also savory from the bell peppers.  Pretty good actually. [Sandi Masori]

Comedic ‘Fiddler’ Uses Clever Staging

Whether it was Tevye mugging during the dance off with the Russians for “To Life” or even the usually scary dream sequence about “Fruma-Sarah,” director Omri Schein really brought out the physical comedy and rubber faces of the cast.  And it worked.  I don’t remember hearing the audience laugh during Fiddler as much they did for this show. [Sandi Masori]
