‘Cambodian Rock Band’ at La Jolla Playhouse tells of genocide

The story picks up in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, 30 years after the invasion of the Khmer Rouge, and as it unfolds it travels back and forth in time between then and now. Yee’s ‘Band’ story is a father-daughter revelation, about not knowing what daddy did in the war 30 years earlier and the music that drove him to stay in his native homeland. {Carol Davis]

‘Superstar’ rocks on Broadway

The scenic design by Tom Scutt is a construction site with bare girders  –possibly for downtown condos that few of us can actually afford. And just as many churches have foregone traditional pipe organs and choirs, the traditional orchestra hidden in the pit has been traded in for a rock band incorporated into the set. Blue Man Group makes noise with ‘Speechless’

Masters of percussion, Blue Man Group employs an array of instruments of wood, metal and glass, plus found objects like large plastic tubes, extended and contracted to vary the pitch, and rubber chickens. All of this is done wordlessly as they work in blue latex masks with robotic moves and gestures, creating an effect that is both eerie and comical.   [Eric George Tauber]

Shakespeare shines on a dark night

Every actor needs to keep some Shakespeare in his pocket for auditions. They must speak their speeches “trippingly on the tongue” (Ham 3:2) making Elizabethan iambic pentameter sound like their natural cadence. And every year, for the past eighteen years, the San Diego Shakespeare Society has presented Celebrity Sonnets in which eminent performers present verse from the Bard. On Monday, Oct 7, 2019, devotées and newcomers came out to the Old Globe for Sonnets and Speeches: A Celebration of Shakespeare’s Women. (To read more, please click on the headline.)

Almost Famous is a wild road trip

ven The Beatles came from humble beginnings. They rehearsed in the garage of Pete Best, their original drummer, because his mum would let them. But for every band that makes it in show biz, there are 999 that vanish into obscurity. Of all the movies to make the transition from screen to musical theatre stage, Almost Famous is a natural fit. My guest is himself the manager of a Punk band and he said this story makes him cry every time.

Bring your dancing shoes to the 33 1/3 House of Dreams

By Eric George Tauber SAN DIEGO –When I walked into the theatre, I greeted the House Manager with a kiss and she said, “I hope you brought your dancing shoes.” I did and I’m glad. She was right. “Our music is part of America’s DNA.” The number 33 1/3 refers to the speed of long

‘Book of Mormon’ sings with wicked humor

By Eric George Tauber SAN DIEGO — We’ve all had them come to our door, those clean-cut, baby-faced teenagers –who use the title “Elder” for some reason- in their starched, white, short-sleeved button down shirts and little black name tags. With wide eyes and toothy grins, they seem cheesily cheerful as they try to convert us.
