Supplemental Program Helps Middle Schoolers on Road to Success

From the Talmud, we learn that a father is commanded to teach his children to swim. That seems a little random at first glance, but in fact, the message is that a parent must teach his children to survive independently when the time arises. A program outside of Atlanta, Georgia is doing just that and has been since 2001. Reach for Excellence has been providing a supplemental education to underserved middle school-aged children and their families. However, Reach is no ordinary program. [Eva Trieger]

‘Extreme Home Makeover’ is a San Diego Theater’s Spin on Well-Known Reality TV Show

By Eva Trieger SAN DIEGO — Reality television shows were not born with “Fear Factor” or “The Bachelor,” yet somehow this genre opened new avenues for questionable entertainment. These shows piqued our curiosity and opened our eyes to how another sector lives. In 2004, ABC aired a show on the family channel entitled, “Extreme Makeover.”

Jewish Motorcycle Philanthropists Support The Butterfly Project

Last month I had the delightful opportunity to interview two bikers who were planning to participate in the Ride2Remember, a motorcycle ride created to pay tribute to Holocaust survivors and memorialize those who perished. This year, the Jewish Motorcyclist Alliance dedicated its contribution to The Butterfly Project (TBP), cofounded by San Diegans Cheryl Rattner Price and Jan Landau. {Eva Trieger}

The Poignant Dramas of Border Crossers

The current offering at La Jolla Playhouse attempts to provide unity and solidarity for those Latinos disenfranchised by politics and economics. Fandango for Butterflies (and Coyotes) celebrates the “joyous, inclusive spirit” that coexists along with the divisiveness and inequity facing immigrants. Through music and dance, audiences are let into the challenging and often harsh realities immigrants of so many Latin American countries have faced, while trying to gain access to America.  [Eva Trieger]

‘The Mechanicals’ Features Summer Camp Nostalgia

By Eva Trieger CARLSBAD, California — Who doesn’t wax nostalgic for those halcyon days of summer camp? Even if there are snakes in the lake or bug juice or pit toilets, there is nothing that connotes summer vacation like a stint at a summer camp, replete with singalongs, poison ivy, and mosquito bites. New Village

Ride2Remember Brings Bikers and Holocaust Education to San Diego

By Eva Trieger SAN DIEGO — On September 2, 1939, much of the world was clueless that the Nazis had opened their first concentration camp to obliterate the Jews and Poles of Danzig, just after the outbreak of World War II. The Saga of a Boy with a Congenitally Broken Heart

Congenital heart disease is not rare and affects 1 in 110 babies with varying degrees of severity. Treatment options offered to Sarah and Matt Hammitt were compassionate care, a full heart transplant, or three surgeries intended to extend Bowen’s life. A documentary, feature-length film, Bowen’s Heart, reveals the challenges, fears, and hopes of Bowen, his three siblings, and his parents. The Hammitt family and the co-directors of the film, Lexi and Zach Read, sought to develop awareness, empathy and support for families living with chronic illness. Their goal was most certainly achieved. [Eva Trieger]
