SummerFest’s ‘In Loving Memory’ Program Salutes the Late Joan Jacobs

This concert’s featured works were all dedicated to the memory of people dear to their composers. Ravel’s Sonata for Violin and Cello was in memory of his fellow impressionist composer, Debussy;  Arensky’s  Piano Trio was in memory of the great Russian cellist, Karl Davidov; and Faure’s Requiem, was written to be performed at the funeral of his dear friend, Joseph Lesoufaché, an architect. [Eileen Wingard]

TICO Performs a Fourth Fifth and a First

Before intermission, we heard Silence, a world premiere by John Michael Luther, based on a poem written by Conductor Amos’ granddaughter, Piper Gillett, when she was 13 years old. The work made a profound impression, especially remarkable that the words were written by one so young, and inspired such an interesting setting by composer Luther. [Eileen Wingard]

LFJCC Will Present 13 Songs by the Late Cantor Sheldon Merel

Hebrew liturgical works by 20th century composers will include, “Hashkiveynu,” and “Avinu Malkenu,” by Max Janowski, “La Kol Z’man,” and “Shalom Rav,” by Ben Steinberg, “Kiddush,” by Kurt Weill, “L’Shana Haba B’Yerushalayim,” by Morton Gold and a setting of the “Kol Nidre,” by Max Helfman.  [Eileen Wingard]

Bell, Dugan Enchant Patrons at La Jolla Music Society’s Gala

Violinist Joshua Bell, and his Piano Collaborator Peter Dugan, entered. Dressed in a black long-sleeved shirt over narrow black trousers, and looking boyish with his slim figure and full shock of dark hair, Bell, accompanied by Dugan, plunged into the first piece, Brahms  Sonatensatz (Scherzo) for Violin and Piano. LFJCC to Present Poems of Yiddish and Hebrew Poets on May 7

Jewish Poets of the Past will feature Yiddish Poet Abraham Sutzkever and Israeli Poet Dahlia Ravikovitch, both recipients of the Israel Prize, that country’s most prestigious award.  The program will be held in the Astor Judaica Library of the Lawrence Family JCC at 7 p.m.,  Tuesday May 7. ‘Fifths’ of Schostakovich and Beethoven Presented by TICO

the Tifereth Israel Community Orchestra (TICO) tackled Schostakovich’s 5th Symphony at their April 14 and 16 concerts at Tifereth Israel Synagogue. Chen on Joachim’s Stradivarius Provided Visual Accompaniment to the Music

Chen is an excellent violinist and Elizalde contributed outstanding keyboard collaboration. They offered informal commentary before each selection, projecting a feeling of intimacy with the audience which set this apart from formal recitals. Debbie Friedman’s Songs to be Celebrated at LFJCC Program
