On My Walks Again (Melody: On the road again)

On my walks again
Twice a day I’m on my walks again.
My owners’ home confines us like a pen.
I need to get us out of the house again … [Elona Baron as Sung to Laurie Baron, Ph.D]

Satire: Trump is God’s way of testing humanity

Tell-all books about Donald Trump keep getting published. We have heard from Mary Trump that the president suffers from a narcissistic personality disorder, from John Bolton that he has no guiding principles in formulating foreign policy, and from Michael Cohen that he is a corporate criminal with a mafia mentality. Still 40 % of the American public considers him God’s gift to the United States. To discredit this belief, God has authored a book called This Is a Test: Why I Created Donald Trump. Here’s an advance excerpt. [Satire by Laurie Baron, Ph.D]

Fiction: Velvl and the Vanishing Chicken

Once upon a time, there was a sleepy Russian village named Mushpushshushnia. That’s my village. Once upon a time, there was a charming, bright, kind, but misunderstood and underappreciated 12-year-old boy named Velvl. That’s me. Once upon a time, Papa told me to fetch a chicken to slaughter. And that’s where the story begins. [Michael Ginsberg]

Golf and the Art of the Double Deal

During an interview with Laura Ingraham, President Trump compared the actions of the Kenosha policeman who shot Jacob Blake in the back seven times to a professional golfer who chokes when trying to make 3-foot putt in a tournament. Though leftwing commentators thought this was an insensitive analogy, Trump views politics from the lens of golf as the following comments edited out of the Ingraham interview indicate. Jewish trivia quiz: Shinzo Abe

Shinzo Abe, Japan’s longest serving prime minister, announced his retirement as a result of deteriorating health. Japan recognized Israel in 1952, but for many years they did not have strong relations, as Japan was a major trading partner of the Arab League, which supplied oil to Japan. Over time, however, Japan and Israel have strengthened their ties, particularly since 2014 when the two countries increased their security, economic, and political cooperation following a visit to Japan by Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In 2018, Prime Minister Abe and his wife visited Israel, and while the trip was considered to be successful, there was one diplomatic gaffe by the Israelis. What happened that upset Abe and his wife and the Japanese staff and diplomats? [Mark D. Zimmerman]

Humoring the Headlines: The 500th Column

When I retired from teaching at San Diego State University in 2012, Don Harrison asked me to write a weekly column. I agreed to occasionally review Jewish- themed films in a column titled “The Wandering Review.” A year later I offered to write a weekly political satire column called “Humoring the Headlines.” Familiar with “The Wandering Review,” Don thought I said that I was willing to write a column weakly. Nevertheless Don approved and all three of the fans of “The Wandering Review” were disappointed that it would appear less frequently. [Laurie Baron, Ph.D]

The Ballot (To the melody of The Letter)

Mail boxes disappearing
As election season is nearing.
If we’re gonna beat him
And soundly defeat him,
Then we all have to cast our votes early.          [Laurie Baron, Ph.D]

Entertaining God, Hollywood style

A sincere group of people in the movie making industry felt the need to rekindle ties to their Jewish heritage. Aware they had a special talent and perspective to bring to religious worship and celebration of God, they formed their own synagogue up north in Los Angeles. They chose an ordained rabbi from the movie business who was a producer and scriptwriter to be their spiritual leader. He graduated from the same high school as myself, Thomas Jefferson in Brooklyn New York. [Ira Spector]
