Attorney, singer Roberta Winston runs for judge

You might have heard attorney Roberta Taylor Winston perform as a cantorial soloist at Congregation Beth El, where she also has served on the board.  Or perhaps you heard her belting out the songs for Congregation Beth Am’s Rockin’ Shabbat band. Even before that, you might have heard her sing as part of the High Holiday quartet that accompanied Cantor Alisa Pomerantz-Boro at Tifereth Israel Synagogue. Now, she’s campaigning for another spot in which she would have an audience, but instead of performing, for the most part, she would be actively listening.  Roberta Winston, 58, is in a race to become a Superior Court Judge in Office No. 18, from which Judge Jacqueline Stern is retiring [Donald H. If Democrats followed Trump’s example

Even after all the evidence presented at the House Impeachment Hearings, the American public opinion polls have not registered a significant shift in the numbers supporting impeachment and those opposed to it.  I believe this has nothing to do with the substance of the case against Trump and more to do with his ability to coin demeaning names for anyone who criticizes him.  Perhaps Michelle Obama was wrong.  Maybe we should abandon the high road and engage in name calling.  Here’s my list of suggested epithets: [Laurie Baron, PhD]

Trump had rationale for upbraiding witnesses

Trump commented that “turncoats” against him include “even Gordon Sondland” who changed his testimony to declare that there was indeed a “quid pro quo” sought by the president and his supporters on Ukraine. Dismissing Sondland’s influence, Trump commented, “He thought he could buy my affection with a little donation to my campaign (reportedly a million dollars); I did name him ambassador to the European Union, whatever that is, but his disloyalty eventually came to the surface.” [Satire by Joel H. Cohen]

The Conscientious Canine’s Thanksgiving Dilemma

I should show solidarity with the turkeys of the world (the poultry not the defenders of the Golden Deceiver.)  Although I can’t read, I have heard the quote from Isaac Bashevis Singer’s Enemies: A Love Story:  “As often as Herman had witnessed the slaughter of animals and fish, he always had the same thought: in their behavior toward creatures, all men were Nazis. The smugness with which man could do with other species as he pleased exemplified the most extreme racist theories, the principle that might is right.” [Elona Baron as told to Laurie Baron]

Jewish trivia quiz: Hunter Biden

Impeachment hearings for President Donald Trump focus on his withholding of Congressionally-authorized United States aid to Ukraine in order to first get a Ukrainian commitment to investigate Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden. It is alleged that this was an extortion effort by Trump for the purpose of hurting his Democratic rival and benefiting his own reelection efforts. Hunter Biden has what Jewish connection in his life? [Humor column by Mark D. Zimmerman]

Impeachment for doggy dummies

My owner is a news junkie.  For the past week, he has disturbed my precious slumber by watching the House impeachment inquiry on television.  Although the cats sleep so deeply that they haven’t listened to any of it, I haven’t been as fortunate.  Rather than waste my time tossing and turning, I have tried to grasp the charges against Trump so I can convey them to the dogs I meet on my walks.  The story goes something like this: [Elona Baron as told to Lawrence Baron, PhD]

Did Israelites need a National Slingshot Association?

He [President Trump]was especially impressed with the account of young David slaying Goliath with a slingshot. “If there had been a National Slingshot Association back then,” the president speculated aloud and in a tweet, “the Hebrews would have enjoyed a much better, greater, probably spectacular, life.” {Satire by Joel H. Cohen]
