Jews in Giuliani’s Space

By Bruce S. Ticker PHILADELPHIA — “This is an affront to American democracy and does permanent, irrevocable harm to our justice system,” says America’s Mayor. Rudy Giuliani was not referring to accusations that he conspired to overturn Georgia’s 2020 presidential election results. He was slamming the fact that a county prosecutor — a Black woman

Israel’s Pot is Simmering

By Steve Kramer KFAR SABA, Israel — Israel’s Knesset is on its summer recess and won’t reconvene until after the Jewish holidays in October. There are several very important, unresolved issues that are simmering. They are: the fate of the reasonableness factor in making Supreme Court decisions  (and subsequent to that, the composition of the

Tripwires in the Tree of Life Trial…Er, That’s Trials

By Bruce S. Ticker PHILADELPHIA — It was a paradoxical week for American Jews, as much as it was historic. The sentencing of Tree of Life synagogue killer Robert Bowers raises disturbing questions about antisemitism’s link to mental illness, the deterrence value of the death penalty and the merits of hate-crime laws. What does Bowers’

What Will Happen to the Refuge That is Israel?

By Bruce S. Ticker PHILADELPHIA — It is a cruel irony that Israelis are preparing to move to Germany or Poland where their parents or grandparents survived Hitler. “They’re willing to accept a drop in their standard of living because they’re so worried that their freedom of movement will be curtailed,” Shay Obazanek told The

By Roz Rothstein LOS ANGELES — In recent months, we have seen tensions in Israel rise to alarming levels. Although the current debate is focused on Israel’s judicial system, it cuts deeper into divisions over what it means for different groups to coexist in a Jewish and democratic state. This has been very painful to

By Bruce S. Ticker PHILADELPHIA — “There is nothing progressive about racism,” said. U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas. It was a shit-hits-the-fan moment  last week when the U.S. House of Representatives reacted to Rep. Pramila Jayapal’s (D-Wash.) “racist state” dig against Israel. Palestinian Chef Levels Tasteless Accusations Against Israel. Is She Full of Hummus?

By Bruce S. Ticker PHILADELPHIA — In The Philadelphia Inquirer’s food section, a Palestinian chef opened up a whole new front…quite an unappetizing one…in the propaganda wars over Israel. I missed a story about Anan Jardali Zahr a native of Acre, Israel, when it first appeared in the July 6 Inquirer. Zahr’s family moved to

Wilfrid Israel: Jewish Holocaust Rescuer and Yad Vashem’s Failure

By Jerry Klinger Over 28,000 extraordinary human beings from over 40 countries have very deservedly been recognized by Yad Vashem as Righteous Among the Nations. OpEd: Louder Than Hate

The recent flyer incidents are not isolated and do not exist in a vacuum. Unfortunately, they are a microcosm of a nation that has been beleaguered by a rise in antisemitism and other forms of hate. ADL’s Audit of Antisemitic Incidents, which tracks anti-Jewish incidents of vandalism, harassment, and assault, saw a 36% increase in reported incidents in 2022 – the highest level ever recorded. Unfortunately, three of the past five years (2019, 2021, and 2022) were record-breaking years as well. [Fabienne Perlov]
