The Jewish Eye: Judiciary Committee and Judges in Focus

The Senate Judiciary Committee screens federal judicial candidates nominated by the President of the United States.  It was in the news this week, along with Justices of the Supreme Court and district court judges in Amarillo, Texas and New York City.  In San Diego, meanwhile, a Superior Court Judge was extolling the virtues of a courtroom dog. Former Jewish Assemblyman Howard Wayne Tells How His Anti-Pollution Bill Became Law

Over coffee, Wayne explained to me that water from the higher elevations runs off regularly into the Bay.  Sometimes it’s rainwater; other times it is water from people watering their lawns, or hosing off their driveways, or washing their cars.  This water heads downhill, picking up whatever debris and pet excrement may lay in its path.  Eventually, the polluted water may find its way into a storm drain and then flow down to Mission Bay or to any of the beaches along the Pacific Coast. Jewish Studies Professor Says Ethics Demand More Humane Treatment of Animals

“I think the single most important thing Jews can do if they want to reduce animal suffering, to practice the value of tzaar baalei Chayim, compassion for animals, is to reduce or altogether stop eating animal products,” says Gross, who is vegan.  “Even if one still continues to eat meat when out and about, it makes sense for food to be more deliberate in Jewish communal settings, which I think should be places where we aspire to have our food represent the best of our values.” [Donald H. Harrison]

Hubbs SeaWorld’s Jewish President Seeks Yellowtail Farming Off Coast

In 1995, the Institute began construction of another facility in Carlsbad where white sea bass are now raised.  The hatchery annually releases 100,000 white sea bass into the ocean.  After learning how to grow and manage a species in more than 20 years of operation of that laboratory, the Institute now is embarked upon a far more ambitious and potentially far more impactful project with California yellowtail. County Humane Society Greatly Expands Under Its Jewish Leader

A visit in December 2021 to Weitzman’s office at San Diego Humane Society indicated that Weitzman, himself, may be the biggest dog lover in the family. “Rosie,” a young German Shepherd, and “Betty” an elderly Pit Bull mix, were ensconced on side-by-side sleeping mats located between his desk and a couch.  Rosie enthusiastically greets visitors, perhaps believing the real purpose of their visit is to see her.  She eventually settles down, taking her place alongside Bett’s mat.  Betty looks up and sighs, as if to say, “She’s a puppy, what can you do?” and placidly closes her eyes again. Book Review: All You Need is Revolutionary Love

There are voices, in the here-and-now, that are heard, but not listened to, and seemingly ignored and unheeded. One of those voices flows from Rabbi Dr. Michael Lerner, some menschkatz and psychotherapist philosopher with licensing letters succeeding his surname. He is an old and wise hippy who was inspired by the dreams of the 1960s and -70s, fought the good fight, survived that fight, learned from the mistakes of that era, and who, to this day, continues to learn from and educate others. Mercury Baron: Our Last Cat (For Now)

Over the past 50 years, my wife Bonnie and I have shared our homes with six cats. The first was a beautiful seal point Siamese paradoxically named Whitey bequeathed to us by friends intent on stopping their baby from playing in her litter box.  In one of her former lives she must have been a dog. She fetched balled up pieces of paper, followed us around like a shadow, and emitted piercing yowls. Siamese are lookers, not singers! [Laurie Baron, Ph.D]
