New Device Can Measure Pupils’ Reactions Even When Eyes Are Closed

Tracking changes in pupil size can help identify a state of wakefulness in sleep, anesthesia, and intensive care and help track the depth of sedation, detect seizures and nightmares, and recognize pain or responsiveness that may occur after trauma and in intensive care departments. The researchers say that this technology has strong potential to become an important tool in clinical care. [Press Release]

Father of Missile Defense Systems Gave Up Career as Locksmith

In the late 1970s, when no one thought it could be possible, Dov Raviv, a Technion alumnus, had a fantastical idea for a defensive weapon that could intercept and shoot down long-range incoming missiles. The idea developed into what would become the Arrow Antimissile System, the world’s first missile defense platform, and what would protect Israel from Iran’s missile barrage on April 13, 2024. Tel Aviv University Researchers Develop Model to Determine Length of a Person’s Step

“Step length is a sensitive measure of a wide range of problems and diseases, from cognitive decline and aging to Parkinson’s,” the researchers say. “The conventional measuring devices that exist today are stationary and cumbersome and are only found in specialized clinics and laboratories. The model we developed enables accurate measurement in a patient’s natural environment throughout the day, using a wearable sensor.” [Press Release]
