He traveled in a freight boxcar to St. Louis, where there was a large ethnic German population. He worked at a variety of entry level jobs, studied English at the St. Louis Mercantile Library, and eventually obtained a job as a reporter for the Westliche Post. His first bylined story concerned a scam in which promoters promised people jobs at a Louisiana sugar plantation, but after taking them about 30 miles downriver on a steamboat, the promoters forced the victims to disembark and then sailed away.

In the television show Taxi, she played the role of Zena Sherman, the sweet girlfriend of DeVito’s character Louie De Palma. In 1982, the same year she and DeVito married, she won the role of the wisecracking barmaid Carla Tortelli on Cheers, which in a run that ended in 1993 won 20 Emmy awards out of 95 nominations. In 2021, the Baseball Writers Association of America honored him with the Darryl Kile Good Guy Award.  In the 2022 World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies, Bregman’s home run set a record at six for most career homeruns by a third baseman. In 1875, his dream of opening Hebrew Union College to train rabbis was realized, with Wise serving as its president. In 1883, non-kosher food was served at what became known derisively as the “Trefa Banquet” for the first graduating class, which Wise declined to condemn. At the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, Serkin instructed generations of pianists and served from 1968 to 1975 as the Institute’s director.  Busch and Serkin founded the Marlboro Music School and Festival in Marlboro, Vermont in 1951.
