Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Will Be ‘Gone by Lunch Time’ in New Zealand

Rush Munro’s ice cream parlor sells only its own ice cream. In Dad’s day it was hand made and he would walk a mile down Tomoana Road to the shop on Heretaunga Street after school for the best ice cream in the country. The shop today is a ‘Happy Days’ TV show style ice cream  parlor with soda drinks and the like, but no burgers or chips. It has an indoor area with a garden bar area with a fish pond that has been there since Dad was a boy. [John Bernard McCormick]

Slow Pace of Village Life in Central France

Like many other villages in this semi-deserted area of central France, the population consists of a mix of old and new, native and foreign. I’ve been told that it was once a thriving place with shops of various kinds and even a café, but now there is no sign of its former commercial activity, and it is purely residential. However, it still has an imposing building housing the mayor’s office, a library and a central hall for public activities, serving as the administrative center for several surrounding villages. Hats, Horses, Humor Enliven Del Mar Racetrack’s Opening Day

If excitement had a color, the atmosphere of Del Mar Race Track would have been bright yellow Friday as the 82nd race season opened. The parking lot attendants greeted attendees with huge welcoming smiles and “Good luck!” despite having to stand in the steamy un-San Diego-like heat. Employees embraced and whooped hellos to each other in the stairwells and on the terraces. The vendors were downright chatty as they charged patrons the requisite $13.50 for a six-ounce pour of wine or draught of beer. Everyone’s delight at returning to in-person horseracing was palpable. When in France…

By Dorothea Shefer-Vanson DOMEYROT, France — Whenever I’m in France, usually for a month or two in the summer, I do my best to read and listen to (and speak) French. I listen to the French classical music program on the radio, where there seems to be rather a lot of talking. This usually consists

Whisky From the Land of Milk and Honey

Israel’s first and only whisky distillery was established in 2015 by a group of ex high-tech Whisky fans. The main investor is Gal Kalkstein, currently the CEO. They rented an old building, formerly the famous “Eilat” bread bakery. Among the leaders are Tal Hotiner, also known as “The Grape Man,” who is an experienced alcohol expert, bar owner, alcohol blogger, and sales and export director;  Dana Baran, marketing director; Tomer Goren, a master distiller with experience in Scotland; and the late Dr James Swan- consultant, one of the world leading experts for warm climate distilling, who used to work with Chivas Regal, Jim Beam and other well-known distilleries. The staff includes more than 20 employees, and the visitor center hosts some 10,000 visitors a year, including workshops and lectures. The name comes from the “Land of Milk and Honey” and the logo is a combination of a dairy cow and honeybee. [Yoni Peres]
