Satire: Swiss Army AK-15s

Last week a US District judge declared California’s ban on semi-automatic assault rifles unconstitutional by declaring, “Like the Swiss Army knife, the popular AR-15 rifle is a perfect combination of home defense weapon and homeland defense equipment. Good for both home and battle.”  The more I think about it, the two are almost identical in their uses. [Satire by Laurie Baron, Ph.D]

A Survivor’s Trek Through Europe and the U.S.

In this memoir, nonagenarian Michael G. Kesler tells how as a teenager, he escaped both forced service in the Soviet Army and the Nazi invasion of his Polish home town by hopping trains with his older sister Luba eastward to the Soviet Asian republics where they both found productive work. Asylum Seekers See Very Little of San Diego on Journeys to Sponsors

U.S.-authorized asylum seekers assisted by Jewish Family Service of San Diego (JFS) may remember our city primarily as a place where they slept on hotel beds with clean linens, had three meals a day delivered to them, and got their first prolonged taste of American television. [Donald H. Harrison]

The Story Behind The Matzo Project

I dreamt up the idea to make artisanal matzo way back in 1995, for Brett Kelly, my next door neighbor in my rent-stabilized, West Village apartment building. Her parents were closing their pizza shop on City Island and I was trying to convince her to take it over and turn it into the City Island Matzo Factory. She didn’t take the unleavened bait and the concept laid dormant in the back of my messy mind for over two decades. [Ashley Albert]

Yay Kosher Website Offers Recipes for All

Yay Kosher began on the advice of a friend of my wife, Caryn Padowitz. The friend, who is a professional chef and successful blogger, had seen the way that others reacted to Caryn’s cooking and noticed that she had gained a certain amount of culinary respect among our peers. In simpler terms, everyone wanted to eat at our table because they knew Caryn would have cooked a delicious meal. [Ben Schneider]

Adventures as a Cruise Ship Lecturer

One day in 1992, I received a phone call from a man who was representing Norwegian Cruise Lines after he had seen me on television. He said one of their ships was about to sail from Miami for a trip around South America; he invited me to be a lecturer on the cruise. The position was unpaid, but the offer included a free cruise for me and my husband in a luxury cabin, the plane trip to and from Miami in business class, and all of our expenses on board would be taken care of.
