Republican New York Rep. Mike Lawler and Democratic New York Rep. Ritchie Torres are planning to introduce legislation to send antisemitism monitors to college campuses and revoke federal funds from schools that don’t comply, the GOP lawmaker announced in a Friday press release. Terrible idea. Antisemitism isn’t easily defined. Sometimes antizionism is perceived as antisemitism. And who’s to say the monitors can tell which is which and just when speech or actions cross the line (violence excluded)? If free speech means allowing pro-Nazi rallies in the streets, it also means allowing both pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli rallies on campuses as long as they don’t impinge on the education or rights of dissenters.
